The Course Reserves service is available to instructors wishing to provide access to assigned readings or viewings. Materials acquired through GIL Express or Interlibrary Loan cannot be placed on reserve.
Reserve requests are processed in the order they are received. Complete citations and early submission of requests help expedite processing.
Electronic reserves must be renewed each semester. Instructors are emailed when items are available for student use.
For online content available through licensed library resources, use the Library Catalog, A-Z Databases list or the eJournals search to locate the full citation information and persistent URL to submit with your request.
- See the Linking to Articles and Films for assistance.
For online content in the public domain or under a Creative Commons license, refer to the terms and conditions for course use permission.
- See the Open Education guide for assistance.
For content not available online, instructors are responsible for evaluating whether the use of a copyrighted work for reserves qualifies as a fair use or requires permission from the copyright holder. Course Reserves staff will scan qualified content on behalf of the instructor.
- Refer to the Fair Use Analysis Basics and the Board of Regents Fair Use Exception to determine if your request adheres to fair use standards, then complete the Fair Use Checklist.
- See the Board of Regents Copyright Policy and Additional Guidelines for Electronic Reserves for assistance.
- Save a copy of the completed checklist for your records.
- If you determine your intended use is not a fair use, request permission from the copyright holder. Permissions can generally be obtained from the Copyright Clearance Center or from the copyright holder. Evidence of permission must be submitted with your request. Library staff are available to help you with this process.
